Description

From Wikipedia: Gantry Plaza State Park is a state park on the East River in the Hunter's Point section of Long Island City, in the New York City borough of Queens.

The 2.5 acre park is a former dock facility and includes restored gantry cranes used from the middle 19th to middle 20th century to load and unload rail car floats and barges serving local industry and the Long Island Rail Road. See Long Island City (LIRR station)

The park offers picnic tables, a playground, a fishing pier and playing fields with a view of United Nations Headquarters and the midtown Manhattan skyline. [1]

Tips

  • It may be difficult to find a parking spot.
  • There's an upscale supermarket called "Food Cellar" at 4-85 47th Road with tables if you would like to get some drinks or snacks.

Directions

  • By Car from Manhattan: Queensboro Bridge to 21st Street, turn right on 21st. Turn right on Jackson Avenue. Turn right on 48th Avenue. Turn left at the corner by City Lights Building, then right on 49th Avenue. Continue to the end. Gantry Plaza will be in front of you.
  • By Subway: Take #7 Train one stop into Queens from Grand Central Station. Get off at Vernon-Jackson Avenue Station. Walk down 48th Avenue to the river. The park is in front of City Lights Building [2]
